The Global Issues SIG Showcase on Monday 21st June highlighted some of the important work being done by ELT professionals around the world to integrate issues of social justice into their practice. This diverse selection of talks and workshops addressed a range of issues – from gender bias to ‘the death of truth’, from sharing the stories of refugees through remote theatre to designing a university course around the sustainable development goals. Our speakers attempted to answer important questions like how best to address teachers’ fears about bringing up global issues in the classroom and how to effectively integrate under-represented minorities in our materials.
