Cinema Inspirations Competition

IATEFL GISIG and MaWSIG invite competition entries for the project ‘Cinema Inspirations’.

Population growth, global warming, disappearing species, human rights … There are many challenges, trends and pressing concerns facing humanity today. The ‘Cinema Inspirations’ project aims to create a bank of freely accessible ELT materials based on films related to these global issues.

Submit an ELT lesson plan based on a film related to global issues, and you could win free entry to the MaWSIG or GISIG 2019 PCE in Liverpool!

‘Film’ is used here to mean any video material that was produced professionally and released for public consumption, Hollywood blockbusters, film shorts, or documentaries!

Your lesson plan may focus on an excerpt or on the full-length film.

We are looking for high-quality teaching material that has not been published elsewhere, and we particularly encourage ‘newbie’ writers to enter.

Entries should include:

  • your full name, email address, IATEFL membership number and preferred PCE (should your entry be successful)
  • a ready-to-use lesson plan for a 60-minute lesson, using the template below [2-3 pages]
  • accompanying material (e.g. worksheet or other) [1–2 pages]

Please limit your submission to five A4 pages using font style Calibri, size 12.

Entries should not include copyrighted content such as published texts or song lyrics. If necessary, please include a link to the source in your document.

Entries will be accepted from 9 April 2018 until 30 November 2018.

Please email your entry to [email protected] in an editable format (e.g. .doc, .rtf)., and put ‘Cinema Inspirations Competition’ in the subject line.

The writers of the two best entries, judged by a panel of MaWSIG and GISIG committee members, will be awarded free entry to either the GISIG or MaWSIG PCE at the 2019 IATEFL conference in Liverpool.

All entries will be included in the resource bank and made available on the GISIG website after the competition closing date.

When judging the entries, we will look for:

  • a clear connection to the theme of global issues in film
  • realistic and clearly justified objectives
  • easy-to-follow instructions for teachers
  • an original approach
  • appealing and relevant content for the target learners and context described
  • an appropriate language/skills focus for the target learners and context described
  • a logical flow between tasks or parts of the lesson.

You do not need to be a member of MaWSIG or GISIG to enter this competition, though we would love to welcome you as a new member!

Only one entry will be accepted per person. The prize is non-transferable, and we cannot offer a cash alternative.
